Enough Is Already Here

Contentment, the Subconscious, and the Quiet Power of Not Chasing

Jasdeep Singh · 5 November 2026 · 5 min read

Often the fastest way to get what you want is to stop chasing it and notice what is already here.

I have spent years quietly watching people: friends, strangers in line at the grocery store, the person beside me on the bus. Again and again I hear some version of the same wish: “I just want to feel confident.” People read the books, repeat the affirmations and push and push. Yet the harder they reach for confidence, the more anxious they seem to feel.

It sounds backwards, but it is one of the most consistent patterns I have observed in human beings, and in the way energy moves through our lives. The way we want something can quietly plant the very thing we fear. This post is about why that happens, and how hypnosis and Reiki can help you shift from chasing to receiving.

Every desire is a seed

Your subconscious mind does not just hear what you want. It hears why you want it.

Think of each desire as a seed. Your life slowly grows into the shape of the seeds you keep planting. When a wish comes from a place of lack (“I’m not enough, so I need more”), the seed you are really planting is not enough.

This is why people often say, “I asked for one thing and got the opposite.” Nothing went wrong with the wanting. The subconscious simply took the deeper message underneath the words.

Why chasing success can rehearse failure

In hypnosis we talk about the law of reversed effort: the harder you consciously force something, the more the subconscious pulls the other way. Try hard to fall asleep and you lie awake. Try hard not to blush and your cheeks turn red.

Success works the same way. The person who desperately chases success has already accepted, deep down, that they are failing. Fear of failure is the fuel. Every time they think “I must succeed,” the thought “I might fail” comes along for the ride, and it gets a little stronger each time.

The road becomes one long rehearsal of failure. Rehearse something long enough and the subconscious starts treating it as the plan.

The ancient Taoist sage Lao Tzu pointed to the same paradox: no one can defeat the person who is not trying to win. When you stop gripping, there is nothing left to lose. You can act freely, from ease rather than fear, and that is usually when things start to work.

Looking for approval vs. owning your worth

The same pattern shows up with approval. The person who most needs praise from others is usually the one who feels least worthy inside. Outside approval becomes a bandage over an inner wound.

Bandages don’t heal what is underneath. Each time we hand our worth to someone else to decide, we quietly confirm the old belief: I am not enough on my own. Picture two people standing face to face, each waiting for the other to say “you matter.” Neither has anything to give, because both are asking.

Watching people over the years, I have come to believe this is the real work for most of us. The goal is not to get the world to finally approve of you. It is to let your subconscious accept a simple fact: your worth was never up for a vote. You were born worthy. Being alive, able to see trees and hear music and feel the sun, is already proof of it.

Contentment is not giving up

Contentment is not something you force on yourself or fake with a smile. It is simply opening your eyes to what you already have. Look closely and you will usually find that life has given you more than you need.

This is not the same as giving up on your goals. A content person still dreams, plans and grows. The difference is the starting point. You act from fullness instead of from hunger, and the seed you plant is I have enough rather than I’m missing something.

The Reiki principles say this beautifully. Each day we are invited to live by five simple intentions:

  • Just for today, I will not be angry.
  • Just for today, I will not worry.
  • Just for today, I will be grateful.
  • Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
  • Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Gratitude is contentment in action. When you are truly grateful for what is here, there is far less room for the restless grasping that feeds anxiety. When energy is allowed to flow freely, there is often a deep sense of settling, as if the body finally remembers it is safe and whole.

Honesty keeps you rooted

The fourth Reiki principle, honesty, goes deeper than not telling lies. It means living in a way that matches who you really are.

Every time we pretend, whether to impress others or to avoid our own feelings, we build a little fog between ourselves and life. Live in that fog long enough and you start to feel cut off: from your body, from the people you love, and from whatever you call the source of life.

Truth works the other way. Being honest with yourself is like a tree sending its roots deeper. Hypnosis creates a calm, safe space where you can finally see what is true for you, without judgement. Reiki supports that same openness at the level of energy. Together they help you reconnect with the steady, authentic self underneath all the striving.

A five-minute practice to try tonight

This short exercise blends light self-hypnosis with a Reiki-style self-treatment. Do it in bed before you sleep, when your subconscious is most open.

  1. Settle. Lie down and take three slow breaths. With each exhale, let your body grow a little heavier.
  2. Place your hands. Rest one hand on your heart and one on your belly. Just feel the warmth of your own hands.
  3. Notice what is here. Silently name three things you already have. Keep them simple: a warm bed, a friend who called, the breath moving in and out.
  4. Reframe one wish. Pick something you have been chasing. Instead of “I need to be confident,” try “I am allowing my natural confidence to show.” Speak it as something already unfolding, not something missing.
  5. Rest. Let the words go. Stay with the warmth under your hands until you drift off.

Do this every night for a week and notice how it shifts the tone of your days. Small seeds, planted often, grow.

You already have more than you think

What you seek is often closer than you imagine. Most of the time you don’t need more effort. You need a different starting point: one rooted in contentment, gratitude and honesty instead of fear and lack.

If you’re in Ottawa and feel stuck in a cycle of chasing (confidence, calm, success, approval), I’d love to help. Through hypnosis we can gently update the beliefs your subconscious has been carrying. Through Reiki we can help your body and energy settle into a sense of safety and enough-ness.
